Postnatal diagnostic – karyotype analysis of lymphocytes from peripheral blood (GEN-100)

The karyotype analysis is performed according to the European Cytogenetic Society recommendations, which was confirmed by the certificates of external quality control CEQAS, received by the laboratory (link to the certificate).

Karyotype is recommended mainly in the following cases:

  • suspected specific chromosomal syndrome based on clinical features,
  • multiple developmental abnormalities,
  • intellectual disability with dysmorphic features symptoms and/or developmental abnormalities,
  • certain isolated developmental abnormalities (e.g. disturbance in sex determination),
  • recurrent miscarriages,
  • infertility

The cytogenetic tests are conducted on whole blood samples, drawn in heparin tubes (minimum 3 ml of blood). Tubes with blood should be sent to the Cytogenetic Laboratory of the Medical Genetics Department by express delivery, at room temperature up to 48 hours after material collection.
